Good news for employees as well as employers: Singapore Government has launched a new grant called ‘Active Commute Grant’ which subsidises up to 80% of the cost for workplace to build showers and lockers so that employees can cycle or jog to work.

Replacing the previous Travel Smart Grant Scheme, the Active commute grants is set to cover more types of developments. Previously, the grant was only restricted to offices. However, under the new scheme, business parks and light industrial development can also apply for the grant.

The new grant will subsidise up to 80% and is capped at $80,000 of the construction cost to install showers, lockers, changing rooms and signage to direct employees to these amenities. 

This move is to encourage developers to support employees who adopt active mobility to commute to work, such as cycling or jogging.  By having such amenities in the workplace, employees can freshen up after jogging/cycling to the work.

Senior Minister of State for Transport, and Communications and Information Janil Puthucheary said that “he hopes more people will consider mixed modes of transport in their commutes. What that means is you can walk to the MRT station and then maybe at the other end you could cycle. We accept it’s going to be a mix of public transport and active mobility. But if you don’t encourage active mobility, public transport is not easy for everybody to use from door to door. That’s what we are trying to do – close the gap”.

Current developments that are undergoing retro-fitting works can also apply for the co-funding grants retroactively.

The application period for the Active Commute Grant is open from 2 November 2019 to 30 June 2021. Qualifying company can apply the grant directly from LTA.

  3. Existing developments undergoing A&A works with affected GFA more than or equal to 1000 square metres (sqm)
  4. Existing developments undergoing A&A works with affected GFA less than 1000 sqm
  5. Existing developments carrying out simple retrofitting works exempted from URA planning permission submission.
